UTC Releases renderings of what will replace Engel Stadium
They will build a new women's sports complex including a women's soccer field
CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – UTC is offering a look at what will replace historic Engel Stadium.
Officials have released conceptual renderings of what will replace the minor league ballpark on 3rd Street.
The old ballpark will be torn down, but groups have been arguing that it should be saved since it is a registered historic site.
The redeveloped Engel site will become a women’s athletics facility.
“These renderings represent our aspirations for what this property can become—a space that honors Engel’s celebrated past while serving the next generation of UTC student-athletes and our community,” said Brent Goldberg, UTC vice chancellor for Finance and Administration.
“We’re still in the early stages of design, and we expect the plans to evolve as we move through the process. But this is an important step in turning our vision into something tangible.”
The main building of the complex will house locker rooms for softball, soccer and beach volleyball.
It also will be the home of a new indoor hitting facility for softball which will replace the one at Warner Park.
The site will also include a new soccer stadium for 2,000 spectators.
They plan to include salvaged trusses, bricks and other materials from the Stadium.
It will also include a memorial space for Engel.
The new Hamilton County Health Department building will also be built on the property.
But before construction can begin, the university still must finish a master plan to incorporate the Engel redevelopment with the overall campus system.
“There’s still a lot of work ahead,” Goldberg said. “But each phase—planning, design, partnership—brings us closer to realizing a space that enhances UTC’s student experience and strengthens our connection to the city.”
