UTC Softball Team Has 23 Home Games Slated For Upcoming Season

Six pre-conference tournaments and 23 home games, nine of which are Southern Conference contests, highlight the 2016 Chattanooga Mocs softball schedule, as announced by head coach Frank Reed on Wednesday. UTC is coming off its 14th SoCon regular season crown, 13th conference tournament title and 10th NCAA appearance in 2015.

"We’re excited about getting started, the holidays will be over before you know it," head coach Frank Reed stated. "Once our student-athletes show back on Jan. 11, it’s here. We go back into our 20-hour week, so it’s a run until Feb. 12."

The 2016 season begins in Clermont, Fla., for the NTC Tournament Feb. 12-14.

"I always take a sigh of relief once we get out in our first game, and it’s time to play," said Reed. "When you get to playing time, it’s get up and go play. That’s what you live for."

UTC hosts two tournaments back-to-back, the Chattanooga Spring Classic and Frost Classic. The Chattanooga Spring Classic is Feb. 19-21 with the Mocs facing Wright State twice, Dayton, Detroit Mercy, UT-Martin and IPFW. At the Frost Classic slated for Feb. 26-28, UTC hosts Eastern Illinois, Evansville, Miami (Ohio), Kentucky and Northern Kentucky.

"We added an additional tournament this year to answer some of the requests from our fans on bringing more games home," Reed explained.

Then the squad hits the highway three weekends in a row. Chattanooga heads to the Bulldogs Slamboree in Starkville, Miss., March 4-6. The Mocs square off with Western Kentucky, host Mississippi State, Longwood, Northwestern State and Central Arkansas.

Chattanooga travels to Charleston, S.C., March 11-13 for the Holy City Showdown. While in South Carolina, UTC matches up against Michigan State, Georgia, Columbia, host College of Charleston and Charleston Southern.

The Mocs wrap up pre-conference tournament play with the USF Under Armour Invitational in Clearwater, Fla., March 18-20. UTC takes on Georgia Tech, host South Florida, Maine, Harford and UMass-Lowell.

"It’s good having diversity in your schedule," Reed said. "Maybe one week you’re closer to home and another you’re farther away. Having good weather is also helpful."

Chattanooga kicks off SoCon action at home against Furman March 24 with a double header on the 25th. The squad plays league opponents in three games spanning two days.

UTC closes its season out at home in Frost Stadium on May 8 with a double header facing ETSU.

The Mocs look to defend their Southern Conference Tournament Title in Greensboro, N.C., May 11-14.
