UTC Softball Team Opens SoCon Tourney by Upsetting Furman

(gomocs.com) CHATTANOOGA — A five-run third inning for the No. 7 seed Chattanooga Mocs was enough to hold off and upset No. 2 seed Furman, 5-4, in the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament at Frost Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

After a scoreless two innings of play, the visiting team Chattanooga Mocs opened the scoring with five runs in the top of the third on four hits and helped out by one Furman error. J.J. Hamill drew a lead-off walk and was out at second on an Amy Lewis fielder’s choice a batter later. Hayleigh Weissenbach followed Lewis up with a double off the right-center fence, scoring Lewis from first, to give the Mocs a 1-0 lead. Aly Walker joined in with a double of her own on the next at-bat, scoring Weissenbach and giving UTC a 2-0 lead. After an Ashley Conner single and fielding error scored Walker, Jesslyn Stockard belted a two-run homerun to open up a 5-0 advantage.

Furman would answer with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third on a Mocs throwing error and RBI double to left-center. The Paladins would plate two more runs in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double and RBI single, cutting the Mocs lead to 5-4.

Celie Hudson, the starting pitcher for Chattanooga, had all the answers down the stretch and closed out the game with a strikeout in the seventh. Hudson (6-9) earned the win as she tossed a complete game and allowed seven hits and four runs (all earned) while striking out a career-high eight batters.

The Mocs belted eight hits off the Southern Conference Pitcher of the Year Lindsey Bert including three extra-base hits. Ashley Conner finished a perfect 2-for-2 with a run scored while Amy Lewis was the other multi-hit Moc with a 2-for-4 day at the plate and a run scored. Hayleigh Weissenbach, Jesslyn Stockard and Halie Williamson were all 1-for-3. Weissenbach recorded an RBI double and Stockard belted a two-run homerun in the win. Aly Walker added the other hit, an RBI double to right-center, in a 1-for-4 day.
