UTC Women Fall to Belmont For Sixth Consecutive Loss
(gomocs.com) CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga got off to a strong start at home Monday night, but fell 67-51 to Belmont in non-conference action at the McKenzie Arena. Chattanooga falls to 4-8 overall and the Bruins improve to 6-3.
Freshman Eboni Williams recorded the Mocs’ first double-double of the season with career-highs in both points (16) and rebounds (10). Shelbie Davenport added 11 points in the effort while Molly Melton dished out four assists and had five rebounds.
The Mocs shot 52.9 percent in the first quarter and led the Bruins 20-14 at the end of the first frame. Williams and Davenport combined for eight points in the Mocs’ 14-3 run that spanned the first and second quarters to give Chattanooga a 24-14 lead with 7:15 to play in the half.
Belmont responded, however, with an 18-2 spurt to retake the lead with 1:22 remaining in the half. Davenport knocked in a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 32-29 at the break. That’s the closest it would get for the Mocs. Belmont continued its run and built its lead into double digits at the start of the fourth quarter.
The Mocs outrebounded the Bruins 41-32, and had six points on 14 offensive boards. Belmont outscored UTC 32-24 in the paint and UTC’s bench, led by Williams, outscored the Bruins’ reserves 24-17.
Belmont had four in double figures with Jenny Roy and Darby Maggard each scoring a team-best 13 apiece. Roy and Ellie Harmeyer each pulled down seven boards and Roy dished out six assists. Macie Culbertson and Maddie Wright each added 11 points and Culbertson had six rebounds and two blocked shots.
The Bruins shot 61.5 percent in the final quarter and 47.4 percent for the game. Chattanooga was 19-of-55 in the contest and made just 3-of-10 from beyond the arc.
The Mocs will host former head coach Wes Moore and the 10th-ranked NC State Wolfpack Friday, December 21 at the McKenzie Arena.
