UTC Women Overcoming a Low Scoring Offense With a Tough Scoring Defense

Chattanooga-(WDEF) The UTC women’s basketball team faces ETSU Friday night.
The Mocs and Bucs are part of a three way tie for first in the Southern Conference.
Chattanooga is once again atop the league standings even though they’re next-to-last in the SoCon in scoring offense.
The Mocs have won their last two basketball games without even scoring 50 points.
49-42 over UNCG and 47-32 over Western Carolina
Are those offensive numbers a concern to Coach Foster?
Said head coach Jim Foster:”No. I think it’s about defense. I’ve always thought it was about defense. The week we beat Indiana and Northwestern and Georgetown and Auburn, it was 61 points, and then in the low 40’s. So this team has been about defense from the beginning.”
Not surprisingly, Chattanooga leads the SoCon in scoring defense.
Said guard Aryanna Gilbert:”He always discusses that to get on the floor, you have to be a defensive player. It doesn’t matter how good you are offensively, if you can’t play defense, then you’re probably not going to get on the floor much.”
Chattanooga’s offensive numbers may not be as high because they’ve had a lot of people out with injuries.
Said Gilbert:”I know some games we’ve had only seven players healthy. I know myself, Keiana, Lakelyn, and sometimes Bria. We’ve had to play like 40 minutes.”
Said Foster:”We are going to get Molly (Melton) back. Move people back to the positions that they are comfortable with. Go from there. That should take care of that.”
UTC does lead the SoCon in three-point shooting percentage, but you can’t count on the three-ball every night.
Said Foster:”What kind of shots are we getting? In our game the other day, we were getting great shots, they just weren’t going in. Well there are days like that, but if you are not guarding, you are not going to win that day.”
