Video Visitation a Reality for Hamilton Co. Jail Inmates

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WDEF) – Video visitation is now a reality for inmates at the Hamilton County Jail.

Deputies believe it’s a better plan than having hundreds of visitors crowding the jail lobby.

For sixty cents a minutes, people can visit their loved ones from the comfort of their own home.

Deputies also say the system will save the county money and increase inmate and officer safety.

Marty Haynes, a Hamilton County commissioner, says, "

County commissioners approved the new system Wednesday.Family members will have the option to visit the inmate at the jail. That is not going away. That will not be a charge."

The county plans to use EdgeAccess to set the system up.

It will not cost the county anything up front, but EdgeAccess will get to keep the first $42,000 worth of revenue and 70 percent of any additional revenue.

The county will get 30 percent.
