Vols Defensive Starters Darrin Kirkland Jr and LaTroy Lewis Out For Ohio Game
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – No. 15 Tennessee will be missing two defensive starters for Saturday’s game against Ohio with linebacker Darrin Kirkland Jr. and end LaTroy Lewis out with injured their ankles.
Volunteers coach Butch Jones said Monday that Kirkland would miss at least one week due to a high ankle sprain and that Lewis would “probably be out a couple of weeks.” Both suffered the injuries in Tennessee’s 45-24 victory over Virginia Tech on Saturday.
Kirkland has a team-high 16 tackles through Tennessee’s first two games. Lewis is tied for fifth on the team with 10 tackles.
Jones says it will be a “week-to-week projection” to see how soon Kirkland could return after the Ohio game. Tennessee (2-0) opens Southeastern Conference competition Sept. 24 by hosting No. 23 Florida.
Ohio (1-1) averages 45.5 points and 563 yards per game.
