Vols Eye Successful Season in 2016
Vols coach Butch Jones says the road to success is always under construction.
Jones watched his team hit a few pot-holes last year, but now he hopes UT has the right tools and players to build a winner this fall.
Tennessee suffered plenty of heartbreaking losses last season, but Coach Jones believes the Vols showed plenty of resolve after a 24-20 loss to Arkansas.
Said Jones-“We talked about we were at a crossroads. This was going to challenge our character as a football team and our leadership. We set a direction out. We actually re-took our team picture on Monday. I thought that was the defining moment because that really showed what type of character we have in our football program.”
UT beat Georgia that following Saturday and only lost to Alabama the rest of the year to finish 9-4. Now the Vols are expected to finish even stronger this year since they return a lot of talent and experience.
Reporter-“Do you feel like you are the team to beat this year in the SEC East?”
Said Jones-“I don’t ever look at it like that. I believe in us controlling the contrables.”
Said quarterback Josh Dobbs-“We feel like we have a great team offensively, defensively, and special teams that we will be able to get it done this upcoming season. We’re still focused on how we can get better. How can Tennessee get better today.”
The Vols enter 2016 with long losing streaks to rivals Florida and Alabama.
But UT is not worried about those two big games just yet.
Reporter-“How many times have you heard Butch Jones say our focus is the first game?”
Said defensive back Cam Sutton-“Every day.”
Added Dobbs-“The most important game in our locker room is the one on September 1st against App State.”
Dobbs and company will also be focused on opening up the passing game.
Said Jones-“When we look at taking the next step in our football program on our football team and offensively, is being able to push the ball more down the field. When you look at a lot of the great offenses, they win the 50/50 ball. They’re able to throw the ball deep and go up and make a play. We’re really, really focused on that.”
