Vols Hoping For More Satisfying Performance Against Virginia Tech

The Vols escaped with an overtime win in their season opener against App State.
Head coach Butch Jones admits his players were not satisfied with the performance.
Maybe that’ll change as Tennessee tackles Virginia Tech Saturday in the Battle at Bristol.
After week one of the college football season, Josh Dobbs ranks 84th in the nation in passing efficiency. Couple that with the big hit he took in overtime, Coach Jones was asked if he might play more than one quarterback against Virginia Tech.
Said Jones-“Again, there is no quarterback controversy or number of quarterbacks. For us it’s Josh Dobbs.”
Said offensive coordinator Mike DeBord-“We had guys open, and we just struggled with the protection part. We went down the field twice on first down and ended up second and long because of the pressure up-front.”
Dobbs was sacked twice against App State, and Virginia tech is known for getting after the quarterback.
Said Jones-“We are going to be challenged with a very disruptive front that causes you communication problems, so communication is going to be at a premium. We’re going to see every blitz known to mankind.”
Only fitting that Saturday’s game is at a race track because both offenses like to go up-tempo, especially Virginia Tech.
Said Jones-“We’re going to be challenged this week with their tempo. They’re going to run 85 to 95 plays, so conditioning si going to be a factor.”
Said safety Micah Abernathy-“Running against our offense. They’re fast tempo as well as Virginia Tech. We like to have a little period where we go fast, as fast as our offense can go. that’s going to condition us as well for this game coming up.”
Said defensive lineman LaTroy Lewis-“We pride ourselves on being in a no-huddle, up-tempo defense. Anytime we see a fast offense, we pride ourselves on saying okay, you are going to go fast, then we are going to get lined up just as fast if not faster.”
