VW Academy prepares for electric vehicle production at Chattanooga plant

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) -The Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga is gearing up to build electric cars.

They’re preparing with training.

There was an open house Thursday for the Volkswagen Academy programs they have for high school and college students.

At the event, the media got a look at an MEB Academy showroom.

Last month, it was announced that scenic city would be home to the company’s first electric vehicle manufacturing facility in North America.

And at the academy, they’re working to implement training for skills needed for the future vehicles.

“We will produce cars differently in the future and therefore we need a different skill set and upscale level of competency of our employees and they will have to go through a certain type of training and that will be blended learning again, and they will be trained in a high level of safety of course and then moving forward to a high voltage training,” head of training at Volkswagen Academy Ilker Subasi said.

2022 is the plant’s target for building an electric car.
