WACKER celebrates International Firefighters Day

CLEVELAND, Tenn. (WDEF) — May 4 is celebrated globally as International Firefighters’ Day.

WACKER in Charleston, Tennessee, has firefighters of their own on standby in case of an emergency at the pyrogenic-silica plant.

The plant’s fire chief says the company honors its firefighters globally because the company has “several other fire departments in Europe.”

It’s also very important for us to honor where we came from. Most of us came from [the] municipal world or cities and counties and now we’re working for an industrial private company, so that’s very different,” said WACKER Fire Chief Dewayne May. “We have our own little city here, so we’re protecting our employees and our team members, community, our contractors and visitors as well.”

The day’s purpose is to honor and thank past and current firefighters, as well as remember those who died in service for the safety of others.
