Walker County Animal Shelter extends euthanasia deadline
WALKER COUNTY, Ga. (WDEF) – The director of the Walker County Animal Shelter says euthanasia lists are created when the shelter reaches critical capacity.
She explains that many animals have already been placed.
“We’re super grateful that a lot of the animals have already left,” the director shared. “We do still have a handful on the list, and our deadline was originally the end of the day today.”
Because of the community response, the shelter decided to allow more time.
“We’ve decided to extend the deadline until the end of the day this Friday, just to really give these animals a second chance,” she explained.
When asked how the community can help prevent euthanasia lists from forming, Director Smith pointed to long term responsibility.
“Spaying and neutering is one of the most important steps pet owners can take to prevent overcrowding and reduce the number of animals that end up in shelters,” Smith explained. “Sometimes mistakes happen and animals get out into the community. One dog can have a litter of seven to ten puppies.”
She emphasized that the shelter should be used only when necessary.
“Trying to use the animal shelter as a very last resort makes a big difference,” she added.
The director also highlighted resources available to families who need help.
“We currently offer microchips here at the shelter,” Smith explained. “They’re ten dollars, we implant them here, and we register all of your owner information.”
She noted that microchipping can prevent pets from entering the shelter at all.
“If your animal ever accidentally gets out, we can give you a call right away and reunite you with your pet,” she explained. “The dog or cat doesn’t even need to come to the shelter.”
The shelter says responsible pet ownership is the most effective way to help.
“We’re here as a resource to help you, so don’t be afraid to call us,” Smith said. “We’ll walk with you through anything.”
She adds that spaying and neutering, microchipping, and using the shelter as a last resort are key steps in supporting the community.
