Walker County Animal Shelter temporarily closed due to animal influx

CHICKAMAUGA, Ga. (WDEF) – Staff at the Walker County Animal Shelter are caring for a multitude of seized animals.

Animal rescuers recently removed dozens of dogs, pigs, rabbits and chickens from a home on Old Lafayette Road.

“It has been an ongoing issue at this particular residence. I cannot commend the diligence of the community for keeping on reporting as well as our animal control officers,” said Bailey Clements with the Walker County Animal Shelter. “They have actively been working on this case to ensure that we are able to follow the correct steps to get this case handled.”

57-year-old Patricia Bryant and her husband, 72-year-old Jerry Bryant, are each charged with two counts of aggravated animal cruelty.

Close to 200 animals were found on their property. More than a dozen of them had died.

Many were living in unsanitary conditions. Neighbors had been complaining for years.

And the stench was so bad, rescuers had to wear masks.

“Our priority is to ensure that each animal is processed. If they are required vet care, we make sure they are receiving it. They receive their vaccines,” said Clements. “Their health is our number one concern. Everything involving that will be documented as well for the open investigation.”

Representatives from the Humane Educational Society, McKamey Animal Center and Bradley County SPCA helped rescue the animals.

Walker County Animal Shelter is working to ensure the welfare of each animal.

“Animal Welfare is a huge issue, especially in our area. we lack the laws that protect the rights of both the citizens and the animals. Unfortunately, we are seeing more and more of these hoarding cases,” said Clements. “It affects everyone from the animals to neighbors and citizens. We want to ensure the welfare of every animal in Walker County and these cases just bring highlight to that and what we are able to do.”

The Walker County Animal Shelter asks any dog owners involved in this case to email wcanimalshelter@walkerga.us.
