WALKER COUNTY, Ga. (WDEF) —  Starting Tuesday, April 15, 2025, Walker County residents can apply for free spay/neuter vouchers for their pets.

This is part of a new program aimed at reducing the overpopulation of unwanted animals.

Each month, the Walker County Animal Shelter will distribute 40 vouchers on a first come, first served basis.

The vouchers cover the spay or neuter procedure, microchipping, and a rabies vaccination, and are accepted at several local veterinary clinics.

“We want to help our citizens, and this is one way we hope to be part of the solution to the overpopulation of unwanted dogs and cats in our community.” said Angie Teems, Chairwoman of the Walker County Board of Commissioners.

The initiative comes in response to rising owner surrenders at the county shelter.

In 2024, 74% of dogs and 93% of cats brought in were given up by their owners, overwhelming shelter resources.

Participating clinics include:

  • Chickamauga Veterinary Clinic
  • Cornerstone Veterinary Service (Rock Spring),
  • Main Street Veterinary Clinic (LaFayette)
  • Villanow Animal Clinic

More veterinary clinics are expected to join.

A full list of participating vets can be found here.

Funded entirely through donations, the program also welcomes public contributions via credit card, Google Pay, Apple Pay, PayPal, and Venmo.
