Walker County Residents Come out to Vote in Record Breaking Numbers
WALKER COUNTY, Ga. (WDEF)- Hundreds of people stood in at the Rossville Civic Center to cast their ballots for the state, local, and the Presidential elections.
Election officials said they had more than 500 people a day come out to cast their ballot during the early election.
Jim Cole, Poll Manager, said they are expecting 1500 to cast their ballots on election day.
Those numbers are recording breaking for the city of Rossville.
“I think it’s because of the candidates this time. We’re having people to come and vote that have not voted in their lifetime”, said Cole.
One mother, Cassie Sparks, brought her children so they could learn firsthand how to exercise their right to vote.
“I think it’s important to teach them that voting is important. For so many year our ancestors fought, especially people of color and especially women. I feel like if I don’t vote then I don’t have a voice .”
Rossville resident Lester Perreault he’s breathing a sigh of relief that election day has finally come.
“We are supposed to be the greatest country in the world. We are the ones that lead, other follow. But the campaign..we don’t know issues to anything from either candidate, whether it be their income tax returns or their emails, it doesn’t matter. We need to be talking about issues. We need to be talking about the economy. We are a democracy and that’s what makes us great. So today our nation says by voting this is who we are and this is who we want to be going forward.”
