UPDATE: Man dies after crash into pond
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – Chattanooga Police say the man whose car ended up submerged in a pond off Greenway View Drive has died.
Police say 75 year old Charlie Allen succumbed to his injuries Wednesday morning.
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)- Chattanooga Fire crews rushed to the scene of a water rescue near Brainerd Road and Greenway View Drive where one man found himself trapped in a pond when his car rolled over.
He was driving a Cadillac coupe; it had to be pulled by firefighters out of a retention pond after it somehow veered off the side of the road and flipped upside down.
Fire crews had a time sensitive mission when rescuing the driver as he was trapped in his car underwater.
Battalion Chief Rick Boatwhright stated, “Three crews worked as a team the car was on its top. You could not see any of the car it was completely submerged. They used wenches that are built into our squad trucks.Entered the water actually hooked the wench up brought the car up on it’s side to where they can get access to one of the window, busted a window out, removed the driver out of the car.”
As crews removed the vehicle from the water , we learned that this same area has had previous accidents before.

“It’s really an odd situation where we have a car flipped upside down we had several in the same spot over the last few years . The crews actually pre-planned what they would do in the event somebody was upside down and trapped in one of those vehicles and they actually put what they had pre-planned into play tonight,” said Boatwright.
Evidence collected on scene is being processed by investigators to determine the cause of the crash.
All we know at this time is that the man is still critical condition.
We are not able to currently release the name of that driver.
The driver is now at the hospital. Fire crews are removing his car from the water. No other known injuries. @wdefnews12 pic.twitter.com/tTkACYf8vz
