Whitfield Co. Hosts PrepareAthon! Telethon

DALTON, Ga (WDEF) – If you think, Oh, I’ve got time to get a weather radio, Whitfield County EMA Officials say you’re wrong, and here’s why.

Amy Cooley, the Emergency Management Specialist in Whitfield County, says, “It can happen any where, any time, and any place.

Jeff Ownby, Deputy Director with Whitfield Co. EMA, adds, “Communication is key in any situation, but especially in emergencies and disasters.”

That’s why EMA officials are holding a PrepareAthon! Telethon from 10 AM to 3 PM today.

They want to reach out to you and enourage you to sign up for CodeRed by going to the county’s website.

If you do, text messages will be sent to your phone alerting you if a potential problem arises.

Ownby adds, “It’s not just for tornadoes, its for severe thunderstorms and flooding as well.”

EMA officials can also use the tool to alert just a small group of people.

According to Ownby, “So, if there’s an evacuation for hazardous materials, we have the ability to send out a notification in a geographical area or a group of people.”

More than 16-thousand people took part last year, but organizers say that’s not good enough.

They want the whole county involved, so no one is blindsided if this happens again.

And it will.

In the last 20 years, Whitfield County has recovered from more than $6.5 million dollars worth of property damage.
