Whitfield County sergeant charged with DUI

Whitfield County, GA (WDEF) – Sgt. Michael Smitherman was charged with a DUI Friday after driving a patrol car while intoxicated.

        A senior officer smelled alcohol on Smitherman’s breath and requested that he take an intoxilyzer test. Smitherman, 44, was scheduled to attend mandatory domestic violence training for patrol supervisors Friday morning.
        The Sheriff’s Office Booking Department discovered that Smitherman was over the legal limit to operate a vehicle, which is .08 in Georgia. Smitherman was arrested and placed on administrative leave pending an investigation by the sheriff’s office.

        Smitherman was released on a $760 property bond signed by a local bonding company.
