CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)- Thousands descended on the Chattanooga National Cemetery Saturday to honor those who have sacrificed for our country.

Saturday was Wreaths Across Chattanooga Day. This is a part of Wreaths Across America. The program honors the veterans laid to rest by placing Christmas wreaths for the holiday season.

Captain Mickey McCamish, a U.S. Navy Veteran and Organizer for Wreaths Across Chattanooga said that, “(The goal) is to honor the veterans that are laid to rest here. To remember these veterans, but also engage students because it is a teaching opportunity. The whole idea is to remember different aspects of a life of a veteran.”

About 31,000 wreaths were donated. Wreaths Across Chattanooga has occurred every year since 2006.
