Questions raised about mental health of Georgia child spanked by principal

ATLANTA (CBS46) – A mom says she was forced to watch her son get spanked with a paddle in school in fear of being charged with truancy if she pulled him from the school to avoid the spanking.

The incident occurred Wednesday in Jasper County, which is southeast of Atlanta.

On Friday, Perez said school officials promised her they will never paddle her son again.

According to Perez, they also promised to get him a professional evaluation, to see if he has an undiagnosed developmental disability.

CBS46 attempted to ask the school if they have a policy for determining if students are mentally fit enough to receive corporal punishment.

So far, school officials have ignored our calls and e-mails on the subject.

Shana Perez says her son was being punished for fighting with another child in kindergarten at Jasper County Primary School.

“What happened at school was not a paddling,” says Perez. “It wasn’t a spanking. It was abuse.”
