183 workers building the Chickamauga Lock to be laid off

A construction company that was helping to build the new Chickamauga Lock has notified the state they plan to layoff 183 workers.

Shimmick Construction is in the middle of a battle with the Army Corps of Engineers over their work on the Lock project.

The Corps has basically fired them over delays and rising costs.

The company is challenging that action in court.

But in the meantime, they are laying off workers.

The new Lock through the Chickamauga Dam has taken years to build.

The current timeline is to finish it in 2028.
