Florence caretaker to repay money taken from elderly patient
FLORENCE, Ala. (AP) – A Florence caretaker who used the debit card of an 81-year-old man for a shopping spree has been sentenced to repay about $7,500 and spend 60 months on community corrections.
Al.com (http://bit.ly/2k4JZHY ) reports 41-year-old Edith Ann Chaney pleaded guilty to first-degree financial exploitation of the elderly.
Authorities have said that Chaney was caring for the man, a dementia patient, when she used his card to make purchases and later return the merchandise for cash.
Lauderdale County District Attorney Chris Connolly says Friday his office agreed to let Chaney avoid prison time for the Class B felony because of her efforts to reimburse the money and lack of a prior criminal record. He says she brought $3,000 to the plea hearing. Chaney could have faced up to 20 years in jail.
