Fatalities reported from northeast Alabama tornado

7pm Update:

— 5 now confirmed dead from tornado in Calhoun County– new tornado warning right now there

— a police officer was struck by lightning while putting out barricades in Florence, AL.  Officials say he is awake and alert at the hospital with some burns.

OHATCHEE, Alabama (WDEF) – Officials report 3 people have died in Ohatchee, Alabama in Calhoun County.

Ohatchee is south of Gadsden on Neely Henry Lake.

There was a report of a warning of a tornado on the ground near Ohatchee.

The Sheriff of Calhoun County confirms the three deaths, but says that number could rise.

Severe weather has ravaged much of north Central Alabama this afternoon.

Alabama Power reports at least 14,000 customers are without electricity now in the Birmingham area.

Throughout the region, there are reports of splintered trees, impassable roads and damaged houses.
