80-year-old pedestrian dies after being struck by car

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — A Graysville man died after being struck by a car on Brainerd Road Sunday night.

The Chattanooga Police Department identified the deceased man as 80-year-old Jack Taylor.

They said Taylor was attempting to cross at the 5600 block of Brainerd Road just before 9:30 p.m. Police said he walked directly into the path of an oncoming silver Audi.

First responders took Taylor to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.

CPD says there will be no charges filed in relation to this accident, but they have notified his relatives.

The police department wants to inform pedestrians on safety tips to avoid accidents such as this one.

They added that the number of pedestrians struck compared to last year is roughly the same. However, this year, many more pedestrian accidents have been fatal.

So far this year, 10 pedestrian accidents have been fatal, compared to three at this time last year. Last year, there were a total of six pedestrian deaths for the entire year.

Pedestrian safety tips from CPD:

  • Use a crosswalk at an intersection controlled by a traffic signal or stop sign to cross roadways.
  • Do not enter the roadway until you have the walk signal.
  • Look both ways before crossing every time.
  • Get a visual commitment from the driver before crossing, even when you have the right of way.
  • Wear bright or reflective clothing when walking to make yourself more visible to drivers.
