CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)-

A new study from triple A Foundation for Traffic Safety reveals a disturbing picture of the dangers faced by those working on the side of the road.

Tow Truck drivers are 4 times more likely to be killed by distracted drivers.

This grim figure dwarfs the approximate 34 noted in national crash data.

The discrepancy is due to a persistent failure of state police crash report forms to capture that crash victims were roadside assistance providers and were often recorded as pedestrians.

But the family left behind is often left without help.

Lauren Colon of the International Towing and Recovering Museum seeks to help the families of those lost

“One of the biggest components of what we do at the towing recovery museum is our survivor fund. and with the survivor fund and the contributions we received over the years we are actually able to assist the next of kin.  When a tower is lost in the line of duty, and this is pretty much no questions asked.  Reach out to us and we will reimburse the next of kin for them.”

What it really comes down to is NOT being a distracted driver, and paying special attention to those roadside hero’s pulling us out of danger.
