Tasty Donuts celebrates National Donut Day with Salvation Army

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — ‘National Donut Day’ is celebrated each year on June 7.

To celebrate, Tony McInnis with Tasty Donuts prepares to serve over 10,000 donuts.

An additional 500 are being offered to civil servants across the Chattanooga community.

Tasty Donuts partners with the local Salvation Army to help those in need.

It goes further than giving people a reason to eat a donut.

Major Douglas McClure with the Salvation Army explained the significance of the national holiday besides the sweet treat.

The national nonprofit actually created the holiday back in 1938.

According to the Salvation Army’s official website, “The Salvation Army created the first donut day event in Chicago in 1938 as a fundraiser to help those in need during The Great Depression. Donut Lassies were Salvation Army volunteers who baked and delivered donuts during World War I.”

86 years later, ‘Donut Day’ continues to be a popular celebration across the country.

Go out and grab a pastry to celebrate Friday and ‘National Donut Day’ all in one.
