DALTON, Ga. (WDEF) —  The Dalton Police Department posted on Facebook reminding everyone that Addy’s Law is now in place in time for the new school year.

Addy’s Law took effect July 1, 2024 after Georgia Governor Brian Kemp signed and passed the law.

This new legislation enhances the consequences for anyone caught illegally passing a stopped school bus.

Individuals who break this law will receive a citation with a minimum fine of $1,000 dollars and points added to their license.

The offender could also face up to a year in prison.

To emphasize the severity, this offense is now considered a high and aggravated misdemeanor.

This new law was inspired by the death of 8-year-old Adalynn Pierce.

Adalynn died after being struck by a vehicle who didn’t stop for a stopped school bus.

The Dalton Police Department urges drivers to note the changes in legislation, and to help ensure kids safety.
