North Georgia could get two new federal judges under bill that passed the Senate

ATLANTA, Georgia (WDEF) – Senator Jon Ossoff says our region in Georgia could see two new federal judges under a new bill.

The bipartisan Judicial Understaffing Delays Getting Emergencies Solved (JUDGES) Act recently passed the U.S. Senate.

The bill addresses delays in the federal court system because of a growing number of cases.

The Northern District of Georgia got 637 filing per judge last year, which was an increase of about a hundred.

The judges would be added to the courthouses in Atlanta, Gainesville, Newnan and Rome in 2027 and 2033.

The Government hasn’t created a new judgeship since 2003.

“The shortage of Federal judges serving Georgians can mean justice delayed or justice denied,” Sen. Ossoff said. “That’s why we’ve now passed this bipartisan bill through the Senate to add two more Federal judge positions in the Northern District of Georgia. We must ensure Georgians have timely access to our court system.”

The bill still must pass the U.S. House.
