The History of Jewish Hate Symposium was held in Chattanooga this week
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)- The History of Jewish Hate Symposium is brought to the community by the Jewish Federation of Greater Chattanooga.
Today we visited the the Jewish Cultural Center, where they were holding The History of Jewish Hate Symposium, where many well educated, speakers spoke on the past historical events of the Jewish culture, present times, and what the future ahead may look like going forward.
The speakers included Dr. William E. Engel: Judeophobia in the Pre-modern Period. Dr. Engel is from the University of the South; Dr. John W. Steinberg: Antisemitism – What Russia Gave to the Modern World. Dr. Steinberg is from Austin Peay State University; and Rabbi Craig Lewis from Mizpah Congregation.
Bill Engel is the Nick B. William Professor of Literature at Sewanee, The University of the South, and author of ten books on premodern intellectual history. In addition to being a founding educational consultant for both the US Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC, and the Nashville Holocaust Memorial, he has taught Sunday School and adult learning courses at West End Synagogue in Nashville, where he is a lifelong member. Bill has participated twice in the Jewish Federation’s teacher exchange program with sister-cities in Israel.
Ann Treadwell, Program Director of the Jewish Federation, says, “What concerns me the most right now, is that people are uneducated about what’s going on and the amount of hate. Hate against Jewish people, but also hate against people who are not like themselves. And so, it is satisfying to me to, to bring programs like this, to the greater Chattanooga area, and order to stem hate and to stem Antisemitism.”
If you missed today’s session, there will be one held every Sunday from 2pm-4pm, up until November 10th.
You can register for the events at rsvp@jewishchattanooga.com.
