Catoosa County sues several companies over forever chemicals
RINGGOLD, Ga. (WDEF)- Catoosa County has joined the parade of forever chemical lawsuits against multiple carpet and chemical companies.
They have filed a civil suit against companies such as 3M, Shaw, Dalkin, Mohawk, and DuPont for what they argue is reckless disposing of PFAS.
The EPA has found that PFAS chemicals can cause various health issues such as cancer, organ failure, and low birth weight among other issues.
Catoosa County says they discovered a significant presence of the chemical in their landfill.
They say it could cost over $100 million to clean up, and want these companies to bear that cost.
The Public Information Officer for Catoosa County, John Pless, said, “Our hope is after filing this is that all the parties can sit down and find a solution that is agreeable to everyone, and that the citizens are number one, protected in their health and welfare, and number two, is that they are on the hook for cleaning this up.”
The county is still in the process of determining how far the chemicals may have spread from the landfill.
There are numerous lawsuits already pending on forever chemicals cross northwest Georgia, especially in Whitfield and Murray Counties.
