Data-Driven Fight Against Overdoses

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) –Local officials are now using a new strategy, surveillance systems that track overdoses in real time.

The Hamilton County Health Department is monitoring tools like O-D-MAP and ESSENCE, databases that show where and when overdoses happen. These systems allow teams to detect sudden spikes and potential overdose clusters.

When alerts are triggered, public health teams can respond quickly. That includes distributing Narcan, sharing alerts with local agencies, and targeting neighborhoods where help is most needed.

Narcan, a life-saving overdose reversal drug, is a key part of the response. Free kits are being offered throughout the county, along with education on how to use them.

While overdose deaths in Tennessee continue to climb, Hamilton County’s approach is helping slow that trend locally, through prevention, outreach, and fast action.

Behind every number is a person and a family. Leaders hope that with continued awareness and access to resources, more lives can be saved.

You can find overdose prevention resources, Narcan distribution sites, and real-time alerts through the Hamilton County Health Department’s website
