Chattanooga, EPB to launch nation’s first quantum tech center

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) —  EPB has announced a major expansion of its quantum technology efforts by partnering with IonQ.

IonQ is a global quantum computing company, bringing a quantum computer to Chattanooga.

According to EPB, this will create the nation’s first quantum technology center with commercial access to both quantum computing and networking.

The new EPB Quantum Center will provide businesses, researchers, and developers with tools to create real-world quantum applications.

IonQ will open a Chattanooga office, offering support, training, and development for quantum computing, networking, and applications.

The partnership includes the installation of IonQ’s Forte Enterprise Quantum Computer, which EPB and IonQ will share for development and training.

EPB also plans to sell access to the computer to other companies, building on the success of its existing EPB Quantum Network, launched in 2022.

“Quantum technology has the potential to define Chattanooga’s economic future. I think we will look back on this announcement as an important day in our city’s history.  Full credit to EPB and their leadership in attracting first Qubitekk and now IonQ to leverage this unique asset of municipal fiber in Chattanooga. Now the real work begins to make sure we can fully leverage the opportunity. We will continue to be supportive in any way we can as a partner.”

-Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly

Quantum technology offers promising benefits for cybersecurity, electric grid efficiency, predictive maintenance, and optimizing logistics and energy resources.

Officials say this initiative could place Chattanooga at the center of a fast-growing industry expected to generate $1–2 trillion in economic value over the next decade.

“We’re committed to giving our young people every opportunity to succeed – by investing in the skills that power today’s workforce and tomorrow’s economy.  With EPB putting our community at the forefront of quantum technology, we’re not just preparing for the future – we’re building it, and making sure the path to opportunity runs through Hamilton County.”

-Hamilton County Mayor Weston Wamp

The EPB Quantum Center is expected to be fully operational by early 2026.
