2025 Carson Scholars honored in celebration of excellence

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – An elite group of young changemakers was honored this weekend at the largest Carson Scholars Fund celebration in the organization’s history.

More than 1,500 students across the nation—each demonstrating outstanding academic performance and a commitment to serving others—were recognized as 2025 Carson Scholars.

Each scholar receives a $1,000 college scholarship, an Olympic-sized medal, and a certificate of accomplishment.

But for many, it’s more than just the awards—it’s a life-changing moment.

This year’s ceremony carried added significance, not only for its size but also for the presence of two influential figures: Dr. Benjamin Carson, world-renowned neurosurgeon, former U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, and co-founder of the Carson Scholars Fund, and his wife, Candy Carson, a respected educator and author.

“We’re celebrating the Carson Scholars who have won for 2025,” Dr. Carson said. “The program started 30 years ago to honor students who are achieving at a very high academic level—but who also demonstrate that they care about other people. The humanitarian component is just as important.”

He emphasized the importance of developing future leaders who are not only intelligent, but compassionate.

“We need people who are not only smart, but care about others.”

Beyond the scholarship, the Carson Scholars Fund also supports students through nationwide Ben Carson Reading Rooms.

“It’s not only the super-smart kids—it’s the kids who we want to become super smart,” Dr. Carson explained. “That’s why we created these reading rooms. We make them beautiful so no kid wants to pass them by. If you get a child reading at grade level by third grade, it changes the trajectory of their life.”

Candy Carson elaborated on the scope of their mission.

“This year, we are celebrating 78 new scholars and 102 repeat scholars,” she said. “Once they win, they’re eligible to be re-recognized every year until they graduate from high school. That continuity helps keep kids motivated to keep sacrificing for those grades.”

She smiled as she spoke about the Reading Room program’s success in Tennessee.

“We have 31 rooms across the country, and 11 of those are right here in Tennessee. It’s so cool to see kids excited about learning.”

The couple’s deep belief in American youth was evident. “We recognize the kids are our future,” Dr. Carson added. “If we can get them to be patriotic, to love one another, and to understand that the American people are not each other’s enemies—we can build something incredible. These young people are already accomplished and full of potential.”

Among this year’s recipients was Kyleigh Conley, a three-time Carson Scholar.

She beamed with pride as she shared her experience. “It feels so amazing because they’ve supported me for so long,” she expressed. “Even the other scholars here were so interested in my work. They wanted to see me grow and succeed. That’s inspiring.”

Kyleigh dreams of becoming a cardiothoracic surgeon—much like Dr. Carson himself.

“Meeting him and talking with him has truly inspired my journey. Their love and support helped me grow into this beautiful person, and I thank them immensely for that.”

She offered advice to others: “I used to just say, ‘I believe in myself,’ but now I say, ‘I can, I am, and I will.’ That mindset changed everything for me.”

Another scholar, Stevenson Vallere, shared a message of gratitude and encouragement.

“It feels amazing and I feel so blessed to have this opportunity to further my education,” he said. “Just seeing all these kids around me and being inspired by them—it motivates me, too.”

He urged students to take advantage of programs like this. “I started just searching online, and thankfully found the Carson Scholars program. I qualified because of my GPA and my service work, like volunteering and language ambassadorships. Whatever you love doing—just do it with heart. You can give back in so many ways.”

Stevenson closed his remarks with heartfelt thanks.

“To Dr. Carson and Mrs. Carson—thank you so much for starting this. I hope God blesses you in abundance. You’ve helped so many who didn’t have the same opportunities, and I pray you continue to do this important work.”

Then, with a wide smile, he added: “Jesus loves you. Have a blessed day.”
