Skyuka Hall senior makes school history with athletic scholarship
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — A senior at Skyuka Hall has made school history by becoming the first to receive a university athletic scholarship.
Logan Smith has committed to Carson-Newman University, where he will join the track and field team as a pole vaulter this fall.
His performance caught the attention of Carson-Newman coach Sam Cleek after Smith set a personal best of 14 feet, 1 inch.
With just two years of vaulting experience, Smith has made rapid progress.
He’s currently ranked ninth in the state, while also holding the top spot in both his division and the Chattanooga area.
Smith also qualified for the state championships three times in four years.
Coach Cleek has a two-year development plan aimed at preparing Smith for national competition.
Smith also has his sights set on a long-term goal, making the 2028 U.S. Olympic team.
Logan plans to major in Youth Athletics and Recreation Management at Carson-Newman, and officially signed his letter of commitment during a ceremony at Skyuka Hall’s gym on Wednesday, May 14.
