Planning commissioner responds to development complaints
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — Some members of the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Regional Planning Agency say that complaints over new developments are over exaggerated.
Ongoing angst over new projects across the county have been a recurring theme for years at this point.
This week’s RPA meeting featured complaints about new developments in Ooltewah on Snow Hill Road and in North Chattanooga among other cases.
Many complaints included traffic and safety concerns.
However, one recurring complaint had Planning Commission member Chris Anderson wanting to set the record straight.
“I hear a lot, I’m sure we all in this room hear a lot, that if ‘X’ is built then my property will actually be devalued. That almost never actually happens. New construction does not devalue surrounding property, it almost always increases it. Anyone who has gotten a letter from the county assessor of property that almost everything has gone up,” said Anderson.
Last week, Hamilton County leaders announced they would be setting property tax rates at a record low in response to the spikes in property value evaluations.
