DALTON, Ga. — Work is underway to pave a trail around the Haig Mill Lake Park.

The paved trail will be ten feet wide and can be used for road bicycling, walking and jogging, while the nature trail sections will offer individuals views of the lake.

The park and existing trail will remain open while work proceeds, with some sections of the trail closed while under construction, the City of Dalton said.

“We were trying to develop a win-win for the folks that wanted to see the paved surface, but there were also some folks that really enjoyed the natural surface. The alignment of the paved trail will in some cases follow the current alignment of the natural trail, but in some sections, it’s going to be constructed off-line from the natural trail. So, for those users that want to continue to have the enjoyment of a more challenging run, for example, or just prefer the natural surface, there will still be significant portions that will complement the new paved trail and remain natural. In many cases, those natural sections will get closer down to the lake, whereas the paved surface will be a little bit further away.”

– City Administrator Andrew Parker said.

Sections under construction are closed, and signs have been posted to warn trail users to turn back.

They say there is not a way to pave a loop fully around the lake due to two dams that create the water reservoir.

All of the work on the project from clearing the path to paving the trail is being performed by Dalton’s Public Works Department.

The project was funded from the City’s 2025 Capital Improvements Project budget.
