You can always choose who to vote for despite mail saying otherwise

Despite what you get in the mail or see posted at the polls, Tennessee voters are allowed to pick which party they want to vote in during a primary.

We’re seeing letters purportedly from the Hamilton County Republican primary that you can only vote in a party primary if you are a bona fide member of that party.

But that’s not strictly true.

You have the option to pick whichever primary ballot you want.

Lawmakers have been trying to pass a new law to close the primaries for several years.

But this year’s attempt failed in the House this week.

We have primaries for local races coming up on May 5th and Early Voting is underway now.

Supporters of an open primary say it encourages Democrats and Independents to vote on your side.

But Republican opponents say they don’t want the uncommitted to pick their nominees.
