Spain Brings Soccer Excitement to Chattanooga
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – What started with cheering crowds welcoming the team turned into something many Chattanooga soccer fans never imagined they would experience in their own city… watching one of the world’s top national teams train up close.
Spain’s national team officially settled into Chattanooga this weekend as excitement surrounding the World Cup continues to build.
After arriving Friday to cheering fans outside the Embassy Suites, where the entire hotel has been rented out for the team, Saturday marked the first open training session at Baylor School.
Access to the event was limited, with fans needing to win spots through a lottery system. Thousands applied for the opportunity, making those selected some of the lucky few.
For Tobias, a devoted soccer fan, the experience felt almost impossible to put into words.
“This is so exciting. I heard there’s like 30,000 people who applied here, so I mean just being here and seeing the best players in the world, I couldn’t imagine anything cooler happening in Chattanooga,” he said.
Spain’s arrival has transformed Chattanooga into a temporary home base for one of international soccer’s biggest programs.
Even details behind the scenes reflected that, with pounds of Jamón Ibérico, a world-renowned Spanish cured ham, reportedly shipped in from Spain for the players during their stay.
Then came the moment fans had been waiting for.
Players stepped onto the practice field at Baylor School, working through drills while supporters watched from the sidelines. For many in attendance, it was proof of just how much Chattanooga’s soccer culture has grown.
Jaylen, who grew up playing with CFC Academy, said the city’s soccer scene has steadily expanded over the years.
“We have the Red Wolves professional team, we have CFC. I played at CFC Academy growing up, so the soccer community is definitely growing here in Chattanooga. It’s just awesome, so awesome,” he said.
Fans also got the chance to see some of Spain’s biggest stars up close, including teenage standout Lamine Yamal and 2024 Ballon d’Or winner Rodri, turning what could have been an ordinary training session into a memorable experience.
For Tobias, seeing Yamal in person was a highlight.
“He dribbles, you know, he puts defenders on the floor, he scores the most insane goals. So yeah, he’s just my favorite player to watch,” he said.
As players worked through drills, excitement around Chattanooga serving as Spain’s temporary World Cup home continued to grow. For younger fans, especially, the day felt much bigger than simply watching a practice.
“Words can’t even describe it,” Jackson and Julian said. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I hope I’m able to remember this. This is the craziest feeling I’ve ever felt.”
The experience also became a learning opportunity for young players hoping to improve their own game.
“They’re the best for a reason,” one fan said. “I’m looking for things I can apply in my training and my games to help me improve as a player.”
At the conclusion of training, players stopped to sign autographs and take photos with fans, ending the day with even more memorable moments.
With Spain expected to continue training in Chattanooga, Saturday’s open session may have been just the beginning of a fan experience unlike anything the city has seen before, as anticipation for the World Cup continues to build.
