Hamilton County data center moratorium formally introduced

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)- The resolution that would formally prohibit new data centers in unincorporated Hamilton County has been introduced.

Mayor Weston Wamp introduced that moratorium Wednesday evening to the Hamilton County Commission.

If passed, the moratorium would prohibit any new data centers for the next year while potential effects of the data centers on rural infrastructure is studied.

While the vast majority of commissioners voiced their support for it, some wondered if 12 months is enough time.

Commissioner Jeff Eversole said, “I would just be concerned. I don’t think a year would be long enough… Other counties that I think there’s one county that did a lifetime ban because of the resources.”

The Commission is scheduled to vote on that data center resolution on July 15.
