Local convenience store to remain closed for investigation
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – After being padlocked last week, the Westside Shop on Grove Street, in College Hill Courts, will remain closed, for now.
The action follows an investigation, and a decision from the District Attorney General. The DA’s office brought two witness to the stand and presented evidence claiming the convenience store is a public nuisance.
According to the Chattanooga police Department, they have responded to more than 200 reports of disorders, fights, narcotics violations, robberies, and shootings at the business. Video evidence saved by the police department was played demonstrating some on the incidents that took place outside of the Westside Shop.
“I saved them because of the criminal activity that was being captured. Numerous hand to hand transactions that resulted in drug arrests either of the seller or the buyer. Other gambling occurring on the premises and various criminal activity. I’ve even observed shootings happening” said Chattanooga Police Officer Kyle Moses.
District Attorney General Neal Pinkston says he and the shop’s owner and lawyer are making arrangements to make improvements.
A new hearing is scheduled for Wednesday May 10th.
