Alabama woman, boyfriend jailed after child’s death

PHIL CAMPBELL, Ala. (AP) – A northwest Alabama woman and her boyfriend are jailed following the death of the woman’s 1-year-old daughter.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office says 20-year-old Hailey Rose Renfroe of Phil Campbell is charged with aggravated child abuse, and her 28-year-old boyfriend Shannon Dale Gargis is charged with capital murder.

Authorities say paramedics who were called to the couple’s home early Tuesday found the child dead. Sheriff Shannon Oliver says Gargis was home alone with the child for the evening, and the mother found the child unresponsive when she came home from work.

The sheriff says the child was a victim of recent physical abuse.

Renfroe and Gargis are being held in the Franklin County jail. Court records aren’t yet available to show whether either has a lawyer.
