Family Shares Miraculous Storm Survival
TRION, GA. (WDEF) – For nearly 33 years, Norman and Janice Gaither called their Trion house home.
In just moments on the Fourth of July, severe storms changed everything when a massive oak tree crashed through the roof, destroying the living room, dining room and most of the kitchen.
The tree fell directly into the room where five family members, Loren and Justin Barker and their three children, Ava, Caden and Easton, had been relaxing together.
Loren says what had been an ordinary evening quickly turned into a terrifying one as the family heard the tree begin to crack before it came crashing into the home.
Norman Gaither, a proud veteran with more than 39 years of service, says his first priority was getting everyone out safely.
The family says they are grateful no one suffered any serious injuries and believes they were protected that night.
While homeowners’ insurance is expected to cover tree removal and major repairs, the family says the loss goes far beyond damage to the house.
The room destroyed by the tree also served as the classroom where Loren homeschooled her two oldest children.
Along with extensive damage to the home, the family lost furniture, kitchenware, homeschool curriculum and supplies, and many other household belongings.
They have also been displaced while repairs are completed.
Despite the devastation, the Gaither family says they are focusing on what matters most, that everyone survived.
They say the outpouring of support from neighbors, churches and the Trion community has been a source of strength as they begin the long process of rebuilding their home and replacing what was lost.
