Former hotel annex destroyed by fire in Smokies

GATLINBURG, Tenn. (AP) – A fire has destroyed a two-story annex structure on the site of a torn-down historic hotel in the Elkmont area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The National Park Service said in a news release that the fire, which was reported by a park visitor, engulfed the former Wonderland Hotel annex Tuesday morning.

Firefighters were able to contain the flames to the immediate area.

The 8,600-square-foot annex building was slated for demolition pending available funding.

The Wonderland Hotel was razed in 2006 after a selection of historic materials were salvaged from the site.

Officials have not offered a possible cause for the fire.
