Keep Pets Safe This Holiday
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – Fireworks may be a holiday tradition, but they can be terrifying for pets. McKamey Animal Center says the days around the Fourth of July are some of the busiest of the year for lost animals as loud noises cause many pets to panic and run away.
The shelter encourages owners to keep pets indoors during fireworks, even if they’re usually calm outside. Creating a quiet room with closed blinds, calming music or a television can also help reduce stress.
McKamey says checking your pet’s identification before the holiday is one of the most important steps you can take. Make sure collars fit properly, ID tags have current contact information, and microchip registrations are up to date in case a pet escapes.
For animals with severe anxiety, the shelter recommends speaking with a veterinarian ahead of time about ways to help them stay comfortable during fireworks.
McKamey also encourages residents to consider quieter ways to celebrate the holiday, saying fewer fireworks can reduce stress for pets, wildlife and neighbors alike.
