Baylor Swimmer Trey Freeman Headed to Fina World Juniors After Winning Two National Titles
Chattanooga-(WDEF) Baylor swimmer Trey Freeman is back home after winning two 18-under national championships last week in Indianapolis.
With his sizzling times in the 200 and 400 meter freestyle, Freeman has qualified to compete against the top young swimmers in the world.
If Trey Freeman was a racer, he didn’t exactly sit on the pole heading into the 200 meter and 400 meter freestyle events at the Phillips 66 National Championships.
Said Baylor head coach Dan Flack:”Coming into the meet on paper, he was a clear third in the two races, and they only take two. So we knew that he was going to have to up his game.”
Freeman revved up his engine.
In the 200, he won the national title with a personal best time just under a minute-49.
Said Flack:”Second fastest 17-year-old in the world right now. Yeah. Yes.”
Reporter:”Second fastest in the world?”
Flack:”Yes.”
Reporter:”In the world.”
Flack:”In the world. Yeah. Yeah.”
Imagine the confidence Freeman had after that going into the 400 meter freestyle.
Said Freeman:”After my 200 I kind of just was. I had a day off. Get nice recovery in. The 400 I was just kind of feeling good. Feeling fast. It was just nice to get out and race.”
Even though he’s just 17, Freeman was racing against pros in the 400 meter finals.
Said Freeman:”I knew there was going to be people way ahead of me in that 400. It doesn’t look good on TV. I’m like way back there, but it’s like no wait, you actually did well.”
Freeman didn’t beat the pros, but he was the fastest 18-under competitor.
That earned him a trip to the Fina World Juniors next month, where he’ll race in the 200 and 400-meters.
Said Freeman:”Feeling pretty confident where I am now, and I think it will just be a great environment to race in and to definitely have a lot of fun.”
