Teachers speak out against Betsy DeVos ahead of Senate vote

Chattanooga, Tenn. (WDEF) — The U.S. Senate tomorrow will vote on confirmation of Betsy DeVos as President Trump’s Secretary of Education.

The Michigan education activist has drawn criticism over her past support of charter schools and voucher programs.

Several teachers gathered this afternoon at the federal courthouse in Chattanooga to protest the support given to DeVos by Senator Lamar Alexander.

“DeVos has no experience whatsoever in teaching, school administration or even handling personal loans,” said Mariah Varner, a teacher with Hamilton County Schools.

“REJECT Betsy DeVos. She is unqualified. We need someone who grasps the basics of public education. We need someone who understands and supports protection for children with disabilities,” said Lauren Allen, a parent of a local public school student.

DeVos was also criticized for lack of support of title 9 funding.

Betsy DeVos is expected to be confirmed by the Senate.
