60-year old man shot in Chattanooga

CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee(WDEF) – Police are investigating a bizarre early Friday morning shooting that sent a 60-year old man to the hospital.

When officers arrived at a produce stand in the 8000 block Old Lee Highway, they found Allen Edge, 60 bleeding and suffering from what appeared to be gunshot wounds.

The incident is somewhat bizarre because Edge reportedly told investigators that he wasn’t shot. Instead he said he may have been electrocuted while falling off to sleep. But doctors confirmed his injures were two gunshot wounds.

"This little stand stays open 24-hours a day and to find out someone came in here and had shot uncle Al. He wasn’t a danger to anybody," said one local resident.

WDEF was on scene when Umair Sheik came to the produce stand looking for Edge.

"My cousin told me there’s a scooter for sale here and that’s why I just came here. And you come here and find out someone’s been shot? Yes it’s really strange," Sheik said.

"Well it’s really a surprises because I do travel this road often and I’ve never seen anything out of the ordinary going on here," Hamilton County Commissioner Chester Bankston said.

But another local resident says she was not shocked by what happened based on her own observations.

"Just lots of drug addict looking people hanging around. I suspected drug dealing going on around here so it didn’t really shock me too much when I saw news media here," said Lisa Neely.

Police have not confirmed if the shooting was accidental, drug related or a robbery gone bad. There are no witnesses, leads or suspect information to go on.

Edge’s injuries are believed to be non-life threatening.
