CCS Offense Off to Fast Start Under New Head Coach Rob Spence
Chattanooga-(WDEF) Rob Spence earned a reputation as an offensive guru during nearly three decades as a college coach.
And it appears all of that experience is benefiting Chattanooga Christian.
Spence has the Chargers off to a high-flying start as their new head coach.
CCS scored a school record 62-points in their first game.
Chargers receiver Jared Miller admits it was maddening adjusting to Coach Spence’s plethora of offensive knowledge.
Chargers receiver Jared Miller admits it was maddening adjusting to Coach Spence’s plethora of offensive knowledge.
"The first week we had spring practice, he was throwing stuff at us. We were just like uhhh. The defense that we play is never going to know what we are running because we don’t even know what we are running. That’s how confusing it was."
Spence made sure he didn’t overload the Chargers with countless plays.
"We’ve really just taken a few things and tried to do them well. Tried to take the approach of do less better."
Said Miller,"It wasn’t one of those things where he called a play, and you ran it twice until you knew it. We ran the play 50, 60, 70, or a 100 times until everyone was perfect."
Said Spence,"We keep repeating it until it’s right. We try to do the little things the right way, and they add up to big things."
The repetition must be paying off.
The Chargers have scored 105 points in their first two games.
Said Spence,"The offense has been playing very, very efficient. They’ve done a great job protecting the ball. Been doing a lot of different things well."
Now CCS is anxious to see how their offense will manage against a talented Notre Dame team on Friday.
Said Miller,"Notre Dame has got more athletes. That’ll be a challenge, but it’ll be fun. It’ll be a lot of fun."
Said Spence,"We know we are going to be tested. We know what kind of talent they have. They have a spectacular bunch of athletes. They are very-well coached."
