Ooltewah QB Kelvin Leon Coming Up Clutch in His Senior Season
Ooltewah, TN-(WDEF) Ooltewah is off to an 8-0 start this season thanks to the emerging play of senior quarterback Kelvin Leon.
He sealed the starting job after a clutch road win, and he continues to pile up big numbers for the Owls.
At 6’2 and 230-pounds, Kelvin Leon may not look like a quarterback.
And his position coach says Leon couldn’t throw like a quarterback early in his career.
Said quarterbacks coach Drew Akins,"He came out as a sophomore, and I’ll be honest. He struggled to throw a five-yard hitch."
But whammo. In his senior year, Leon has already thrown for 1,800 yards this season.
Said Akins,"Two things I think happened to make him become the kid he is today. One is he sold out in the weight room. He’s one of the strongest kids on the team period. The other thing that happened. He had some success in wrestling. I think the wrestling season gave him some confidence to come out here and do what he has been doing this year."
Leon looked pretty confident coming off the bench in a road win against Siegel.
Said head coach Mac Bryan,"It was impressive now. The last drive was amazing. Brought us back from 13-3."
Said Leon,"Just played how I was taught to that week, and we came out with a win."
Leon’s size and experience are paying dividends.
Said Bryan,"He has been in the offense a couple of years. He has learned. He has studied. He has worked at it. He’s making really good decisions."
Said Akins,"It’s hard to hit him and take him down. It’s something to be said for a quarterback. He does a great job of keeping his eyes down field when there is pressure."
Leon is making the most of an unconventional throwing style.
Said Akins,"He doesn’t throw the conventional way. He doesn’t throw the way you teach it. But he gets the ball to where it needs to be."
Said Leon,"To me it’s getting the ball out to the athletes on the team. I like doing that. I think that’s my favorite part."
Said Akins,"He has really been a great asset for us this year that we really didn’t see coming as a coaching staff. We thought we would go a different directions. He has done a great job.">
