Company announces their deal to buy the Bellefonte Nuclear Plant is almost done
HOLLYWOOD, Alabama (WDEF) – The deal to turn the old Bellefonte Nuclear Plant into a northeast Alabama job magnet is just about done.
Nuclear Development LLC has until November to finalize the purchase of the unfinished plant from TVA.
On Monday, the company announced they have cleared most of the hurdles to the purchase.
That’s good news for Jackson County, which stands to gain more than 8,000 jobs if the empty plant becomes productive.
Congressman Mo Brooks predicted at the press conference today that about 3,500 workers would be hired just to build the new facility in the coming years.
TVA built the nuclear plant 40 years ago on the Tennessee River below Chattanooga.
But as regulations grew for the nuclear industry, the plant was never finished.
TVA abandoned their latest plan to complete the facility two years ago and decided to auction the site.
Nuclear Development LLC won the auction and has two years to complete the sale.
The two year period ends in November.
